On a blazing day in the Mid-West, Randy of MusicInterviewsNow found himself chatting with Xavier Rudd, who’s performing for the next couple of months in the states. From down under, Rudd talks about his current album and what’s in store for his fans come October...
I am gearing this interview towards the new Xavier Rudd fans. We are out of the Mid-West, and I want Xavier Rudd to be heard. Can you start off by telling us a little bit about yourself and your music?
I’m from the South East coast of Australia, you know...roots music. I’m not sure what else to say! (he laughs) I will be having a new album come out in October...
You have shared the stage with Dave Matthews, Jack Johnson, and Ben Harper. How did you get to that level?
You know, just playing all the time, working hard, and playing music.
Your music involves many, many instruments. Can you fill your fans in on this aspect, and shed a little light on your abundance of talent?
I play guitars, Yidaki which is also known as didgeridoos, Weissenborn slide guitars, stomp box, harmonica, and percussion...
With all those involved, what’s an Xavier Rudd show like for fans who haven’t had the chance to attend?
I make it very smiley, bubbly, and bouncy. It’s high energy music. It’s pretty organic, yet it can get heavy at times. It’s beautiful music.
I’m going to try to pick your brain a little bit...I want you to tell me what comes to mind when I mention these people/things...
Dave Matthews...
Gentle.
Ben Harper...
Talented.
Australia...
Ancient.
Steve Irwin...
Powerful.
President Obama...
There is a new energy everywhere I go. I feel it. I go to a lot of places, and there is a different vibe.
How was Hollywood? You did the music for the Matthew McConaughey movie Surfer Dude...
It was different...there are a lot of people involved, movie producers, etc. It had a totally different vibe.
You are hitting major cities right now...have you ever done college towns? I can’t even imagine what an Xavier Rudd show would be like at a huge school town...
You know, I’m not sure what’s what in America. I’m still learning...(laughs)
Your fan base would multiply in so many ways...
Thanks man! You know, I am still pretty new in America...
People know who the DMB is, and the Jack Johnson’s...and I have to say that I am honored and excited to be able to talk with you because it won’t be long before you are known everywhere.
Thank you my brother.
I often ask this: where do you see yourself in 7 years?
You know, I just take things as they come. I just hope I am healthy and still making music.
Is there anything you want to say to your fans that are coming out to your shows?
I just want to say thank you. I come from a long way away, and it means a lot to me that people come out to see my show.
Xavier Rudd isn’t just an amazing musician, but he is also a humanitarian. Be sure to check out his work and all of his albums, and catch him in a city near you.
