ANBERLIN

Scott chatted with Nathan Young, the drummer for the current up and comers Anberlin. They are currently shooting up the charts with their smash hit “Feel Good Drag” and have no plans to stop with just the one hit. Nathan talks about the new record, being recognized in Japan, and answers a few questions straight from the fans!

First and foremost, who is Anberlin?

We all came together throughout the years, and most of us have been playing since 2002. We recorded in ’02, and put it out in ’03, and have been going strong. Two of

us live in Florida, one in Nashville, and the other in California.

Your new album, New Surrender, is your fourth album...first major release. Is there a difference between the first three albums?

The switch to Universal is a huge difference...we were never really on the radio before, and now we are. There are always horror stories about major labels, and it’s not even like that. There are a lot of genius people working for them.

You guys are number eight, and Feel Good Drag is taking off...how has that been?

It’s crazy...we never thought we would be in the top ten...we are excited.

You all just came back from a world tour...is that the first time you all were over seas?

No...we have been over seas a ton...it was our fourth time to Australia, and our second to Japan. It was unbelievable. Since being with Universal versus Tooth and Nail, we have become a presence...its wild.

Our slogan is Bringing Bands to the Fans, and I want to ask you the questions that are from your deep fans...one of them is: (Anberlinfan101) Did the song There Is There A Light That Never Goes Out inspire or influence the sound of The Unwinding Cable Car?

Hmm...I’m not sure...I feel like...I think we are very influenced by those older bands a ton...but not specifically...they have a huge influence though...

(Hellodancerepair) When are you guys going to release this DVD I keep hearing about?

Ummm...we’re not sure...we would like to this year, but most likely next year.

(emaildump) Back in the Sagoh 24/7 days, where did the piano in the middle of Alchemy (last song on ...Then I Corrupt Youth) come from?

I didn’t record on that record...I think it’s from their old drummers father in law...he was a classical pianist, and I think they used a sample for that record.

Let’s talk about the new album...any new singles coming up?

We are riding it out...I think the next single will be Breaking though.

How’s the reception been?

It’s been amazing...we were nervous at first...we were hoping it would be fresh, and everything has been unreal...fans singing along...it’s been great.

Is there any story to this album?

A lot of the songs were written based on personal experiences...very personal. I think they are life experiences as a whole.

What’s your favorite song on the new album?

I really like Retrieved and Disappear.

What’s your favorite song to play onstage?

Probably Feel Good Drag...I think the fans like that one...

It is a fun song...a lot of the other artists’ hits on the radio get boring...but this is fun.

What’s been your weirdest fan experience?

I think walking around Japan and getting stopped in the street was weird...being so far away and being recognized. Or ,for that matter, even being in my home town and getting recognized...

Are you guys getting gifts?

Oh yeah...fans make cakes...a lot of random things...

If you could tell your fans one thing, what would it be?

Keep listening to your favorite bands music, and supporting them...they appreciate it, and we thank all of you.

Where do you see yourself in seven years?

Always playing and being involved in music...

Anberlin is a fresh feel in what seems to be a sometimes stagnant pool of music on the radio. They are fun and exciting and I strongly encourage you to give them a listen if you haven’t already.
